One of the most unexpected controversies of the Obama administration came to a head Tuesday as the president delivered a hotly debated back-to-school speech to students across the country.
Many conservatives expressed fear over the past week that the president’s address would be used to push a partisan political agenda.
Obama, however, avoided any mention of political initiatives. He repeatedly urged students to work hard and stay in school.
“There is no excuse for not trying,” he told students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. Watch Obama speak to the students
“This isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. Gov. David A. Paterson said on Friday that the chorus of people who believe he should not run for election next year want to keep him out of the race because he is black.
“We’re not in the post-racial period,” said Mr. Paterson, according to an article posted on The Daily News Web site, which cited an interview the governor provided to a radio program hosted by Errol Louis, a Daily News columnist.
“My feeling is it’s being orchestrated, it’s a game, and people who pay attention know that,” he said. “We have a media that doesn’t report the news. We have a media that wants to make the news.
